What's the best option for cleaning my deck?
I have seen ads on TV showing steam cleaning of patio furniture, the dirt being dissolved and just "running off", leaving the surface clean. Can steam cleaners also be used to clean built up algae/mould from wooden decks / boats?Would a pressure washer (1400 psi) better clean wooden decks of algae?I have been working at this problem using a scrub brush and javex solution, but with 2000 sq.ft. of decking would like to find a less labor intensive method.Would you please compare the above methods of cleaning algae/mould from wooden decks? Thanks
The steam cleaners you have described wouldn't do a large deck. There is a long standing debate amongst professionals about what does more damage to decks -- bleach or pressure washing. Both break down the fibers in the wood. My personal preference is detergent, water and a good long handle boat brush. I will add bleach if necessary. I then coat the deck with a wood preservative with UV protection and a mildew inhibitor.
