Follow up question on broken treadmill.... From George on broken Proform 540-S, to MMH EXPERT_JK:

Thanks for your response. I tried the calibration mode, but only got an E in the speed field, 696 in the distance field, and 520 in the time field. I could not toggle to the next level at all by hitting the stop button. Once I disconnected the key and tried again, it wouldn't go back to the above, i.e. it went back to the incline motor whirring away... I then disconnected the 8 wire connector at the controller board, and turned on the power. Red LED lit up on the controller but nothing else. No incline motor whirring. I would gladly check for voltage from the console to the controller if you would point me in the right direction. I do have a multi-tester. I do see a harness going down and into the steel frame of the machine, which must be bound for the console (and back?), so It must be somewhere in that cluster of wires. HELP! Thanks,

Thanks for sending a second email.

If the relay on the motor controller board was stuck in the on position, the incline motor would have tried to go up with the 8 wire harness disconnected.

I am sending you an image of the wiring schematic for the treadmill. If you have a volt/ohm meter, you can check the continuity of the wires in the harness to the 8 wire connector. If you read for resistance between each of the wires in the harness you should not get any resistance between any of the wires, with both ends of the harness disconnected. If you read resistance between any wires, replace the wire harness.

If the harness checks good, the console is bad.

The harness that goes through the frame of the treadmill is where the shorts usually occur.

Dear MMH EXPERT _ JK, To be completely sure of my resistance tests, I went to Sears and got a new decent multi-meter, model 82344, about $30.00. All wires of the main harness (8) showed 0 Ohms resistance, and the tester went all the way to the lowest auto ranging scale in doing so. According to your last response, this means that the console is bad. Is it possible to to get a reconditioned one to save $? The price quoted is $275 on the Sears parts website, which doesn't make sense to do on a 5 yr. old treadmill, when a whole new one can be had for $400.00 - 500.00. I can't believe that a unit that cost $700.00 5 years back that got moderate use is totally fried. I paid $129 for a home service contract that I never used. Thanks for any help you can give me.
