Why won't my garage door opener work at all?

Model #139.53975srt1. Opener will not open by wall mounted push button. Remote and keypads don't work either. However, light comes on as usual so I know I have power to the unit. Please help!

If the door does not move or jerk at all, and you are hearing nothing when pressing the button, and the lights come on but do not flash or there is no code LED light flashing on the opener, then we have no real direction to go and have to start with basics.

The "Having a Problem?" section in your manual and the links below have some basic information and troubleshooting to help narrow the search down.

If those basics do not help, try releasing the door from the opener and see if the garage door is stuck or unbalanced. If the door itself seems okay, move on to testing the opener with the door disconnected from it, if the opener works now then there is likely still some problem with the door and it needs more detailed inspection.

If the opener does not work even with the door disconnected, the next step is to test if the opener motor is engaging or not. If you can hear the motor, or it feels warm after you try opening the door, then the motor is trying to open the door but some failure or something jammed or binding somewhere between the motor and the lift assembly is preventing it. That could be a problem with the gears in the opener or the chain that runs to the door lift or that lift assembly itself might be jammed.

At that stage the testing moves to the electronic components. Check for damaged or disconnected wires that could be at fault. You can also look for signs of discoloring or heat damage to indicate a possible failed part, but you might want to consult a professional to confirm any diagnosis as the components themselves can be difficult to test and could even be damaged or shock you if tested incorrectly.
