Install Track Lighting

Track lighting gives you a great deal of flexibility. After it is installed, you easily can change the number of lights, their positions or the direction they point ????????? even the type of light.

The initial hookup is much like other ceiling fixtures. But installing the tracks themselves involves measuring your ceiling and establishing lines for correct placement, so the track is pleasingly aligned with your room.

Have two ladders and one helper on hand for placement.

Also, be sure to consult manufacturer's instructions for specific information regarding the product you are installing.

Time: If you are working from an existing ceiling box, 4-6 hours for a 12-foot system.

Skills: Connecting wires in a box, careful measuring of and attaching to a ceiling.

Tools: Tape measure, Phillips screwdriver, and drill with screwdriver bit.

How Track Lighting Works

Instructions for your unit will tell you specifically how to make connections, but most track lights go together in the following way. A connector unit connects to the ceiling electrical box and transfers power to the tracks. Inside the tracks are two metal strips that run along its length. They are electrified by wires from the box.

The lights themselves have two contacts at their base. When the contacts meet the electrified strips, the light comes on. A connector cover caps off the connector unit.

Step-by-Step

1. Install the connector unit

NOTE: Shut off the power before beginning work.

Attach the black, white, and ground wires from ceiling fixture box to the connector unit terminals. Hook wires clockwise on the screw shafts before tightening. Fasten the connector unit to the canopy.

2. Lay out and install tracks

To establish a line that the track will follow, measure off a wall at several points, and strike a line between them. Connect the track to the connector plate.

3. Install lights and attach cover

Screw the track directly into ceiling joists, or use toggle bolts between joists. Attach the canopy and any connector covers by snapping into place.

Once the track is secured, install individual light fixtures according to instructions ????????? in most cases, you simply twist them in place along the track.

Finally, restore power to the circuit and test the lights
